Your leadership team might be repelling talent away from your organisation – let me tell you why. I’m a person of colour applying for a role and I look at the executive team and they are overwhelmingly white 88%. They do have a better cultural mix at the grassroots level. What does that say about my career prospects? Should I apply?
As Adia Harvey Wingfield says “Being a person of color at a predominantly white workplace creates its own special kinds of stress“.
This is the one of the first things that talented people of colour/CALD/non-white are faced with when they are looking at their next role.
Having an almost all-white executive team in a city that is diverse, or an organisation where the rank and file are diverse is a microaggression (a sign to show marginalised people that you don’t belong) and at worst a red flag.
What do you all think?
